The Spay Pod
What is the Kaua'i Spay Pod?
The Spay Pod is a half shipping container which has been converted into a veterinary surgical unit! It is ideal as it provides a sterile, comfortable, yet efficient size of space for high volume, high quality, cat sterilization surgeries. The space can be increased by adding pop up tents outside for registration and recovery stations. The Spay Pod is semi-mobile, and is always located in a convenient, central place on island. Currently the Spay Pod is located at Kealia Farms near Kapa'a.
The Spay Pod operates one to two days a week, with the capacity to sterilize 70 cats per week, and has sterilized over 1,000 cats so far this year. Our veterinarian, Dr. Katie Spaulding and Technician, Kden Surp, are specially trained in high volume, high quality spay/neuter techniques, allowing them to safely and efficiently provide sterilization for up to 35 cats per day. They work alongside a team of specially trained volunteers who handle registration and release, instruments, cleaning and all other non-medical tasks. All cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped, ear tipped, vaccinated and given internal and external parasite treatment.
