Lanzarote - Canary islands

Lanzarote is a Spanish island, the northernmost and easternmost of the autonomous Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. It is located approximately 78 miles off the north coast of Africa and 621 miles from the Iberian Peninsula. Lanzarote is the fourth-largest of the islands in the archipelago. With 152,289 inhabitants, it is the third most populous Canary Island, after Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Located in the centre-west of the island is Timanfaya National Park, one of its main attractions. The island was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1993.

Animal Balance has been invited by the NGO Desert Watch to provide a comprehensive plan for an islandwide TNR program, with the goal of humanely reducing the islands' cat population utilizing a sustainable model.

AB's Directors, Emma Clifford and Elsa Kohlbus, will join Dr. John Boone, an incredible Biologist, who advocates for all species, for a series of presentations and meetings to the Government of the Canary Islands, local NGOs and the veterinary community on-island, in July.

We will report back after this initial visit with the next steps in the strategic plan to protect all species who live on Lanzarote.

We are eager to assist another archipelago. We base our solutions from 18 years of experience providing veterinary support to the Galapagos Islands. In 2004, we created a humane animal management program that is now managed by the agency that protects the biodiversity and biosecurity of the archipelago, ABG.

Our solutions are humane, logical, comprehensive and sustainable.
