This was our third clinic in Sacramento and our partners at Bradshaw Animal Shelter decided to switch it up and do an all-cat clinic! The AB team loves a good cat clinic, so we were really excited about this one, despite the intense heat! Most of our team members were from California but a few flew in from Ohio and Texas. We set up the clinic at the Fletcher Farms Community Center and it was the perfect building for this clinic. We had plenty of room to have the organized and fun weekend of spaying and neutering almost 200 cats.
Friday was all feral/community cats for trap, neuter, return. The people that care for the outside cats living in their neighborhoods are just the best. Often they name the cats, provide food and water for them, and bring them into these clinics to help end the cycle of breeding. Some of the people that brought in cats also volunteer at the clinics! It was nice to see them and help them in this way.
Normally you don’t wish for over 100-degree temperatures when doing a MASH spay neuter clinic, but this weekend it actually helped! Cats sometimes wake up cold after surgery and once they are awake it's hard to hold and cuddle them enough to get their temperatures up to a safe level. With the extremely warm temperatures outside, we were able to have a volunteer sit outside with the cats who were cold in carrier under a covered patio as they woke up. It worked every time to get the cat’s temperature up and no one got scratched trying to hold an awake and sometimes unhappy kitty!
As always, the AB team laughed all weekend. We have a way of bringing together like-minded, hard-working people who almost immediately mesh into a kick butt team. One of the prep techs, Kaz, told me a tech friend of hers put in an application with AB because she was tired of hearing how much fun Kaz was having on these weekends and wanted to be a part of it!
