There are some experiences in life that remind you exactly why you chose this profession.
Volunteering at the high-volume high quality spay and neuter clinics in the Galápagos was one of those experiences for me.
For years, I had admired the work that Animal Balance was doing on the islands. I followed their mission and the incredible impact they were making on animal welfare, public health, and conservation. I had volunteered in a few clinics in California but being able to finally join their team and contribute to that work was truly a dream come true.

What made this experience so special was not only the medicine and surgery, but the people and the purpose behind everything we did. Working in a remote environment with limited resources challenged me in ways I hadn't expected. It pushed me to think creatively, work efficiently, and appreciate the value of teamwork even more. Every day brought new learning opportunities, from adapting to unique logistical challenges to collaborating with an incredible team of professionals and volunteers who shared the same commitment to animal welfare.

Despite those challenges, the standard of care provided to every animal was exceptional.
One of the most inspiring parts of my experience was working alongside Jessica and Dr Eddie. The passion for animal welfare and dedication to protecting the unique ecosystem of the Galápagos was evident in every decision they made. They lead with both expertise and heart, creating an environment where every volunteer feels supported, valued, and motivated to give their very best.
Seeing firsthand the impact of years of hard work by Animal Balance was incredible. This is not just a spay and neuter clinic, it is a long-term commitment to helping animals, supporting local communities, and preserving one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Knowing that every surgery contributes to both animal welfare and conservation gives this work a deeper meaning.
I came home with improved skills, new friendships, and memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my career. More importantly, I returned with a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude for the profession I chose.
If you are considering volunteering, I encourage you to take the leap. Whether you are looking to grow professionally, give back to a meaningful cause, or simply experience something unforgettable, this opportunity offers all of that and more.
Being part of this mission was an honor, and I hope many more veterinarians and veterinary
technicians will have the chance to experience the same sense of fulfillment and inspiration that I found in the Galápagos.
Sincerely,
Diana Vera-Gasca, RVT
